Foundation degree in Community Evangelism

What is a foundation degree?

Because education is becoming increasingly important in today’s world of work, foundation degrees have begun to change the way in which people study and the way in which businesses choose to develop their staff. There is a growing recognition that specialist academic knowledge, along with practical skills and experience, are now required to help prepare us for the challenges of the future.

A foundation degree is a degree combining traditional university study with learning that takes place at work. These degrees help to make sure students can get the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in the workplace.! The catch is that we want people who are committed and passionate!

How does it work?

The foundation degree is a 3 year part-time course delivered by The Light Project in partnership with The University of Chester. Students can obtain a student loan for this course. The degree is designed so that students who are working full-time or part-time can access the course from anywhere in the UK. Training is delivered over a series of teaching blocks on weekends and holidays. Students complete seminars online as well as taking part in an ongoing placement in their local area, usually with a local church or mission group. They are assessed through work experience, group projects, presentations and written essays.

Some of the modules include

New Testament Studies

History of Mission & Evangelism

Christian Theology and Doctrine

Communications & Culture

This is a highly practical course for those who want hands-on learning as well as lectures.

Entry requirements:

Each year, we consider various applications and choose specific people who we believe will benefit from the course. There is no guarantee you will be accepted because of qualifications – we are looking for the right heart and the desire to know and serve God.

There are two entry requirements to meet for this course:

1. Show us you are capable of doing the practical work. You may have stories about your experience of mission and evangelism, good or bad which will count towards your application and convince us that you will benefit from this training.

2. Show us you can do the academic work. The conventional way is to show you have 140 UCAS points or equivalent. If, however, you do not have A or AS levels we will consider your application in a different way (please contact us for details).

How has studying and being part of the Light Project impacted your life?

“I like to study: if I had less study and teaching, all practical, I think I wouldn’t have grown much. But the teaching at the Light Project sets me up for my practical work. You hear people saying I’m ‘a different person from when I started’, but I see myself changing, developing, week-to-week, and monthly because of the stuff I’m learning. For instance, looking at storytelling in evangelism and relationships has altered the way I do things from the sessions straight into my practical ministry. This is all because of studying alongside the practical work.”
